Kihei is sometimes referred to as the
"Gold Coast". Kihei's (pron. kee-hay) name means
"cape", and is both a residential and resort area.
In the old days Wailea's name meant "water
belonging to Lea"...the goddess of canoe making.
Both towns are situated on the leeward side of
East Maui, and have most of the prime beaches on
the
island.

The Maui

southwest shore of Maui. Maui is the most popular among
vacations of all the Hawaiian islands. You will land at Kahului
airport and travel a short 11 miles to Kihei. World class
restaurants, beaches, golfing, and shopping await you. South Maui is
known as the sunny side of Maui only receiving 10 inches of rain a
year. Kihei is protected by Haleakala Crater - a 10,000 foot
dormant volcano which blocks all the rain clouds from the coast
keeping the rain on the west side of Maui. Kihei offers 22
miles of coastline with beautiful beaches and great
snorkeling. Kihei - Wailea area is famous for its award
winning restaurants and shopping, plus the townships prohibited high
rise construction so you will not see any buildings over 6 stories
high, providing for a laid back atmosphere. |
